Your dermatologist will take a current medical and social history. They’ll ask you questions about current medications, health issues, and whether or not you smoke or drink alcohol.
You may be asked to disrobe and given a hospital gown for a full-body skin exam to check for any suspicious moles or other skin conditions. Regardless, the dermatologist will conduct a thorough skin assessment to make sure nothing is missed.

Typically, most dermatology treatments that are deemed medically necessary are covered by insurance. These services generally include treatment for various skin conditions like psoriasis or eczema and the treatment of skin cancer. Unfortunately, most cosmetic treatments are not covered under insurance.
Dermatology and plastic surgery are both focused on helping you look your best, but there are some key differences.
Dermatology is a branch of medicine that deals with the study and treatment of the skin and diseases of the skin. Plastic surgery is a surgical specialty involved with improving a person's appearance and the reconstruction of facial and body tissue defects caused by illness, trauma, or birth disorders.
Both dermatologists and plastic surgeons may practice medical aesthetics - administering Botox injections and dermal fillers. Still, plastic surgeons tend to focus on surgical options to improve appearance, whereas dermatologists concentrate on treating the skin. Some dermatologists, like our Dr. Viscusi, also perform limited surgical procedures.
