Other Dermatology Conditions
Actinic Keratoses: To treat this most common pre-cancer caused by chronic exposure to ultraviolet rays from the sun and/or indoor tanning, we offer several treatment options including cryotherapy, chemical peels, curettage, photodynamic therapy (PDT), and laser resurfacing.
Age and Liver Spots: Also known as lentigines, these spots are typically not cause for medical concern. We offer a variety of treatments including topical bleaching creams to lighten the spots, as well as chemical peels, laser or intense pulsed light therapy, and cryotherapy to remove them.
Boils and Abscesses: We treat these often painful lesions with incision and drainage and/or topical and oral antibiotics.
Cold Sores: Although there is no cure for the herpes simplex virus (HSV) that causes cold sores, we can alleviate the pain with the use of a prescription anesthetic gel or an antiviral oral medication to speed healing and prevent recurrence.
Contact Dermatitis: We treat both irritant contact dermatitis and allergic contact dermatitis through the use of topical steroids and, if widespread, a short-term course of oral or injectable corticosteroids. We also help prevent future outbreaks by pinpointing irritants or identifying allergens through patch testing.
Dandruff: We treat persistent cases of dandruff with prescription-strength shampoo or a steroid lotion, as well as offer guidance on ongoing maintenance and prevention.
Herpes Zoster: We offer antiviral treatment to reduce the pain and duration of the localised blistering and rash commonly known as shingles.
Hives: To treat hives and angioedema, we use prescription medications including antihistamines and anti-inflammatory drugs to reduce swelling, redness, and itching and, if needed, a drug to suppress an overactive immune system.
Impetigo: We offer several treatment options for this common acute superficial bacterial skin infection (pyoderma), including both oral and topical antibiotics.
Melasma: To lighten these dark, discolored patches on your skin, we offer several treatment options including topical steroids, chemical peels, and laser and resurfacing therapies.
Molluscum: This viral skin infection, common in childhood, can heal itself in 6-12 months. For faster resolution, we offer treatments including topical creams, curettage, cryotherapy, and laser therapy.
Moles: Most moles don’t require any treatment but, if necessary, we perform surgical removal of cancerous or irritated moles.
Nail fungus: To resolve fungal nail infections, we offer a combination of oral and topical antifungal therapies including oral antifungal drugs, medicated nail polish, and medicated nail cream. In some cases, it may be necessary to surgically remove the nail in order to apply an antifungal drug directly to the infection.
Periorificial Dermatitis: As topical corticosteroids seem to be a risk factor for perioral dermatitis, we prescribe an oral or topical antibiotic or cream to suppress the immune response.
Pigment Irregularity: Treatment options for postinflammatory hyperpigmentation, melasma, solar lentigines, and ephelides include the use of topical agents, chemical peels, cryotherapy, or laser and resurfacing therapies. Surgical excision or laser treatment may be used to address café-au-lait macules.
Psoriasis: While there is no cure for psoriasis, there are more treatment choices than ever before to help reduce inflammation and control the shedding of the skin. We use a combination of topical medications, light treatments, Xtrac laser treatments, and medications that work throughout the body. We also offer guidance on controlling triggers, such as stress, that may cause flare-ups, as well as general skin care tips to help manage symptoms.
Rosacea: To calm the redness and swelling of this chronic skin condition, we offer a variety of treatments including oral and topical medications, lifestyle modifications, laser, and light therapies. We also offer guidance on avoiding common triggers such as sun exposure, spicy foods, hot baths, alcohol consumption, and emotional stress.
Seborrheic Keratoses: Although they are harmless, seborrheic keratoses can be removed using a blade to scrape it off, cryotherapy, and electrodessication and/or curettage.
Skin Tags: We use a variety of treatments, including cauterization, cryosurgery, surgical excision, and ligation, to remove these harmless lesions.
Vitiligo: Everyone is unique in their experience with vitiligo, so different therapies will produce better responses for different people. To restore color to the white patches of skin, we offer a variety of treatments including topical corticosteroids and topical calcineurin inhibitors, Xtrac excimer lasers, depigmentation therapy, and surgical skin grafts and tattooing for small areas of skin.
Warts: Treatment will depend on the placement and personal preference. To remove warts, we offer a variety of treatments including cryotherapy, laser treatments, topical chemicals, and, in some cases, surgical removal.
XTRAC: FDA-approved for the treatment of psoriasis, XTRAC is a small handheld laser that concentrates a single band of ultraviolet B (UVB) light on psoriasis lesions to penetrate the skin and break the DNA of the T cells that multiply to create psoriasis plaques.
Benign Mole Removal: There is no medical need to remove non-cancerous moles, but some people prefer to have them removed for aesthetic reasons. Excision, also known as cutting, involves removing the mole and a small margin of skin using a scalpel or special surgical scissors. If your mole has grown deep into the skin, stitches may be required to close the wound.
Photodynamic Therapy (PDT): PDT is a three-stage treatment that combines light energy with a drug (photosensitizer) designed to destroy cancerous and precancerous cells after light activation.
