Skin Cancer
It's not just a mole. It could be skin cancer.
Skin cancer is more common than you think. Skin cancer affects millions of people of all skin colors worldwide and should be treated by a professional. Regular checkups with our expert dermatologists can prevent skin cancer from developing into a more serious condition.
What is Skin Cancer?
Skin cancer is a form of tumor that starts in the cells of your skin. Tumors can be benign or malignant, with the latter being more dangerous and having an increased chance of invasion into nearby tissues and organs. There are three major types of skin cancer — basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma, and melanoma.
How does it happen?
This common type of cancer generally develops in areas exposed to sunlight, but it may also develop on parts not ordinarily touched by light as well.
What are the signs of skin cancer?
Checking your skin for suspicious changes can help detect skin cancer at its earliest stages. Early detection of skin cancer gives you the greatest chance for successful skin cancer treatment.
The number one symptom of skin cancer is a change on the surface. It could be anything from an old mole that’s growing to redness or brown spots and itchy patches anywhere on your body. Some warning signs include:
- Small, smooth, shiny, pale, or waxy lump
- Firm, red lump
- Sore or lump that bleeds or develops a crust or a scab
- Flat red spot that is rough, dry, or scaly and may become itchy or tender
