Skin Cancer Surgery

You can feel confident that we’ll get rid of every trace of your skin cancer.

Skin cancer is the most common cancer in the United States and worldwide. One in five Americans will develop some form of skin cancer by the age of 70, and while it can be scary, it doesn’t have to be life-threatening. Early intervention can remove the cancer and provide peace of mind.

At DESSNA, our board-certified dermatologists specialize in multiple forms of skin cancer surgery and will create a customized treatment plan to determine which will be most effective for you.

Surgical Excision

Surgical excision is a procedure in which the surgeon removes a cancerous or benign skin lesion with (known as “wide excision”) or without (known as “simple excision”) an area of surrounding tissue to eradicate the cancer or growth. The procedure is fairly simple, requires only minimal downtime, and can be done under local anesthetic.

Mohs Surgery

Mohs surgery is a surgical technique that uses progressive removal and examination of thin layers of cancer-containing skin to precisely remove all cancerous tissue while preserving surrounding healthy tissue. This procedure allows the surgeon to ensure the cancer is clear before deciding on the optimal healing method, effectively minimizing scarring and maximizing cure rates.

“Slow” Mohs Surgery

“Slow” Mohs, like Mohs Surgery, employs progressive removal of thin layers of tissue. In contrast to Mohs surgery, the samples are processed as rush permanent sections and sent to a pathologist for overnight review. “Slow” Mohs is used primarily to treat malignant melanoma.

Currettage and Electrodessication (ED&C)

Used for mild, well-defined, and shallow skin cancers, ED&C can be a good treatment option as it is a fairly quick procedure that does not require stitches.

In this procedure, a skin lesion is removed with a thin surgical tool used for scraping. Once scraped, the area is treated with a mild electric current designed to kill remaining cancer cells and reduce bleeding.

Photodynamic Therapy (PDT)

Photodynamic therapy (PDT) is a two-stage treatment that combines light energy with a topical medicine designed to destroy cancerous and precancerous cells. Photodynamic therapy targets abnormal cells and microscopic tissues that cannot be detected during routine examinations or even MRI scans.
