Skin Discoloration

Clear, even-toned skin that glows with health and vitality isn’t just a dream. We specialize in treatments tailored specifically to even out skin tone and color.

Pigmentary disorders are a group of conditions that involve a disorder of the natural coloration of the skin. We treat a host of pigmentary disorders with a variety of treatment options for all skin types.

What are Pigmentary Disorders?

Pigmentary disorders typically indicate an increased amount of melanin — the primary determinant of skin coloration – leading to darker skin pigment. Known as hyperpigmentation, these spots can be embarrassing and cause some people to feel self-conscious.

Sometimes the disorder is caused by the absence of sufficient melanin. This hypopigmentation makes the skin appear lighter or white.

Although most hyperpigmented lesions are benign and the diagnosis is straightforward, it’s important to exclude melanoma and its precursors and identify skin manifestations of systemic disease.

Common types of hyperpigmentation are:

Post-Inflammatory Hyperpigmentation (PIH)

PIH occurs when the skin overproduces melanin as it heals from an inflammatory wound like a pimple, rash, or scrape. The melanin darkens the skin, and the discoloration remains even after the wound is healed.

Melasma

More common in women than in men, melasma causes dark, discolored patches on your skin, usually located on the face, neck, or forearms. Birth control, pregnancy, hormone therapy, and other changes in hormone balance can trigger melasma.

Brown Spots (Lentigines)

Brown spots, or lentigines, are brown flat lesions with a clearly defined edge. The most common type, solar lentigines, arise in middle age and result from sun damage. They are most often found on the face and hands and tend to be larger and more defined than freckles.

How do they happen?

Genetic mutations or acquired diseases can result in changes to pigment production, which affects your natural tone.

Who’s Affected?

People with darker skin are more susceptible to hyperpigmentation because their skin creates an abundance of melanin. Melasma predominantly affects women. Other types of hyperpigmentation affect both men and women equally.
